Blood tests at Bannerbrook Pharmacy
Our blood tests are taken by a trained phlebotomist in a comfortable, private setting. The range includes thyroid, cholesterol, diabetes and vitamin level tests, with both NHS and private appointments available.
NHS or private: which blood test do you need?
The right choice depends on who has asked for the test and what you want to find out.
| NHS blood test | Private blood test | |
| Who arranges it | A GP, nurse or other prescriber requests the test, and the pharmacy takes the sample for them. | You choose the test yourself and book directly. A GP refAerral is generally not needed. |
| Cost | Free when requested by your NHS clinician. | Check the pharmacy’s current prices; costs may vary depending on the test. |
| Where results go | Back to the clinician who requested the test, who then contacts you. | Results are shared securely by the agreed method, such as email or a patient portal, or with the referring clinician. Turnaround times vary by test. |
| Best for | Tests your GP or hospital team has asked for, such as monitoring a condition. | Checking something yourself, such as vitamin levels, or when you want a test your GP has not requested. |
If you are unsure which applies to you, ask us before you book. If your GP has asked for a blood test, the NHS route is usually the right one.
How to prepare for your blood test
In most cases you do not need to prepare at all. Some tests, such as a fasting glucose test used to check for diabetes, ask you to go without food for around 8 to 10 hours. Water is normally fine, and fasting tests are usually done in the morning.
- Follow the instructions you are given when you book, because fasting times differ from test to test.
- If you have diabetes, speak to your doctor before fasting for any test.
- If you take regular medicines and are unsure what to do, ask us or your GP before changing anything.
What happens at your appointment
Most blood tests take only a few minutes. The phlebotomist takes a small sample from a vein in your arm and the sample goes to a laboratory for analysis. If you dislike needles, tell the phlebotomist beforehand, and sit or lie down if you feel light-headed.
What to do with your results
A result outside the usual range is not a diagnosis. Book a conversation with your GP to put it in context, and call NHS 111 if you feel acutely unwell. If you are unsure about a result, our pharmacists can point you towards the right next step.
