NHS prescriptions: collect in store or have them delivered
Repeat prescriptions should be dull: ordered on time, ready when promised, and no chasing. We dispense NHS prescriptions, and you can either collect them from us or have them delivered to your home.
How prescription delivery works
- Choose us as your nominated pharmacy. This tells your GP surgery where to send your electronic prescription. How to do it is explained below.
- Order your repeat medicines through the NHS App or the way your surgery usually takes requests. Ask us about automatic repeat ordering if you would rather not remember each month.
- We prepare your order once the prescription reaches us from your surgery.
- Choose delivery or collection. We deliver NHS prescriptions to nearby areas, and same-day delivery is available in some local areas. Tell us your address when you first ask and we will confirm whether we cover it and when to expect your medicines.
If you have a medicine that needs special handling, such as something kept in the fridge, tell us when you set up delivery so we can plan it properly.
What an NHS prescription costs
In England the NHS charge is £9.90 per prescription item for 2026/27, unless you are exempt. A 3-month prepayment certificate (PPC) costs £32.05 and a 12-month certificate costs £114.50. A PPC usually pays for itself if you collect more than a few items a year, so it is worth checking if you take several regular medicines.
Many people pay nothing. Prescriptions are free for children, people aged 60 and over, pregnant women and those who have recently given birth, and people with certain medical conditions or on qualifying benefits. Check your eligibility on the NHS website, and tell us if you have an exemption certificate.
Delivery charges, where they apply, are confirmed with you when you set up delivery. We will always tell you before anything is added to the NHS charge.
Avoiding a last-minute gap in your medicines
Most delays happen before the prescription reaches us, not at the pharmacy. A few habits help:
- Order when you have about a week of medicine left. Surgeries commonly need a few working days to approve requests, so check your own surgery’s policy.
- Keep your phone number and address up to date with both your surgery and us.
- If you are about to run out, call us. We can often help you find out where the request has got to.
Pharmacy First: treatment without a GP appointment
Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, a pharmacist can assess you and, where appropriate, supply treatment for seven common conditions without a GP appointment or prescription:
- Sore throat
- Earache
- Sinusitis
- Infected insect bites
- Impetigo
- Shingles
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women under 65
You can walk in or contact us directly, and the consultation takes place in a private room. If the pharmacist thinks your symptoms need a GP or urgent care, they will tell you and help arrange it. Your GP practice is notified afterwards, and the usual prescription charges apply if you are given a medicine.
If symptoms are severe or getting worse fast, call NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency.

How to choose a local pharmacy
Opening hours and distance matter, but they are not the whole picture. Before you commit to a pharmacy for your repeat prescriptions, ask:
- Are the hours realistic for you? Evening and Sunday opening makes a real difference if you work during the day.
- How does delivery actually work? Ask who delivers, when, what it costs, and what happens if you are out.
- What else can they do? A pharmacy that offers Pharmacy First, vaccinations and testing saves you repeat trips.
- Is there a private consultation room? You should never have to discuss symptoms at the counter.
- Is the pharmacy registered? You can check any pharmacy on the General Pharmaceutical Council register.
These are fair questions to put to us too, and you can read about our pharmacy team before you decide.
Making BannerBrook your nominated pharmacy
Your nominated pharmacy is where your GP sends electronic prescriptions by default. Changing it is free and you can do it in any of these ways:
- Choose BannerBrook Pharmacy in the NHS App.
- Ask your GP surgery to update your nomination.
- Tell us in store or on the phone and we can help set it up.
Once that is done, your repeat prescriptions arrive with us automatically, ready to collect or deliver. If you would like to start, book an appointment, call 02476 422120 or visit us on Banner Lane.
